P/S [Penanam Sayur] Your Lelaki MElayu BErmasalah comment has to wait. Still compiling it.. :p
Get Ready! It's the 27th ERC Treasure Hunt

We are heading for Kuantan tomorrow for the treasure hunt... =)
Our group name is The Travelling Ducks.. Sorry Pearl & Pato for my lack of creativity. I was under heavypressure. During registration, we need a name, pronto. And I was reading your blog, so naturally and conviniently the name suits our situation perfectly (i.e. travelling). =p
Being good with the map, i would be in charge of reading the tulips (navigator).
TO give you the idea how hard this would be, I'm listing sample questions that we deciphered last year:
1. Tail removed, the clown fish goes berserk next to Picard's craft.
2. Sweet Robert walked backwards.
3. Add a hundred to get a very small style.
4. Pay back time.
5. Bear home intruder has setup perm shop here.
6. I hear this place is clueless!
7. Katie Man out of tune here?
8. The knighted Iwan serving here?
9. Seems like these people are only friendly in the morning.
10. 5501
and the answers were:
1. Monen Enterprise (Nemo + Star Trek)
2. Trebor candy
3. MIRO Design (add C you get MICRO very small; C=100 in roman)
4. Yap Kedai Jam
5. Goldilocks Hair Salon
6. No Eye Dear Restaurant (No idea = No Eyedear)
7. Takamine Guitars.
8. Restoran Thai Siriwan (Thai SIR Iwan restaurant)
9. AM Mesra Enterprise (am friendly enterprise)
10. VINCCI (V in CCI aka 5 in 501; roman numerals)
Crazy or what?
Wish us luck. ;)~

Bush toughens sanctions on Sudan

US President George W Bush has announced fresh sanctions against Sudan over the four-year Darfur conflict.
Mr Bush said more Sudanese companies and individuals involved in the violence in Darfur would be barred from trading or banking with the US.
He also said he would push for a new UN Security Council resolution to put more pressure on President Omar al-Bashir.
More than 200,000 people have died in the four-year conflict between rebels and pro-government militias in Darfur.
"For too long the people of Darfur have suffered at the hands of a government that is complicit in the bombing, murder and rape of innocent civilians," Mr Bush said.
"My administration has called these actions by their rightful name: genocide.
Full Article: BBC UK

The thing that irk me most was when he made the announcement. He casually walked to the podium and with the straigth face, punishing the mass Sudanese people.
Their (Sudanese) policitians are too rich to care already. The sanctions means nothing to them.

Someday Malay children would be like this too.. All bumiputras companies are being merged into one, and we are still dreaming about Akademi Fantasia.
God gives us freewill... And all we excel at is to abuse it.

How Civilization Treats Its Helpless Members
Back in the days where everyone knows what Michael J really looked like, getting an information meant taking a 30 minutes hell bus ride to the Dewan Sri Pinang (Penang library). Then depending on your luck, you may (most of the time, NOT) get what you're looking for.
Those days, if you're searching for 'animal kingdom' subjects, (searching here means asked the librarian), she would happily pass you the 30000-pages-could-kill-dog-in-one-strike encyclopedia while muttering something about 'please be quiet'. Depending on the mood, she would sometimes give you a reference number (in Dewey decimal system), and asked you to manually search for the book. Luck and fate will determine that you'll get the correct book at the correct shelf.
I wonder how we survived back then.
Cosmetic tested on animals
========================
Growing up back then where 'Fraggle Rock' rocked, I always wondered whenever I saw the label "not tested on animal" on my MUM cosmetics. Like, how did they conduct the test? What sort of tests? Did they (at the lab) apply thick foundations and makeup to chimpanzee and observed how pretty the chimp turned into?

"Am I a beaut or what?" My imagination ran wild.
Well, that was then, luckily when I went for college, the internet was booming. Therefore, all the answers were within a click away.
Is Your Pet Palatable?
========================
Growing up as a teenager, there was a point when you'd experiment on everything.
There was a point where I felt how cruel it was to slaughter and eat an helpless animal. Watching an actual cow being slaughtered during eid (and the people around were like dancing in joy)compounded my disgust towards such act. Therefore, for like two weeks, I turned into a vegetarian. Two weeks? well the soul was weak okay, you cant grow up eating vegetables alone.
After a while, I came to a term of acceptance that this is parts and parcels of life. But still, I wouldnt touch the meal prepared, if I see the slaughtering at work.
Ignorance is a bliss.
But I drew my line on what meat should be consumed and what not. The meat that totally off my menu is le rabbit. Not only I would imagine that I'm eating a cat, but the very notion of eating a gentle, cute, and fluffy creature breaks my heart to pieces.
The same goes to the sharks fin and the whale. It's just morally wrong to consume from something that being executed mercilessly.
Plus, karma bites. Tonite you might be gobbling on that $200 per bowl sharksfin soup. Karma has its way that tomorrow you'll get a nasty service from the KFC's cashier (or any other service providers; the Malay dominated one preferred).
But My Granpa, his Granpa, and his Granpa eat it what?
========================
It's the tradition. Don't insult my culture. Some might argue.
Culture and tradition only existed about 3000 years ago. Before that, in the bronze age, human were homogenous. Be it chinamen, melayu, org putih, org hitam, what sort, all of us are the same. Civilization did not exist..yet.
When civilization flourished, they could afford enjoyed those delicacies because the supplies were abundance and demands were limited.
Think about the future you're handing to your kid. Do you want him to grow up knowing whale existed only in the Sea World?
My Sexual Prowess Is Legendary
========================

For those who thought eating exotic animals would increase your sexual performance, you must have had a severe case of brain damage.
The Sumatran tigers, Sumatran rhinos and the Malayan pangolins are in a brink of extinction. Just for a mere 10 minute of satisfaction (subjective!), would you risk wiping out the whole species?
If you're really that incompetence, use the plant-based aphrodisiacs. Period. Tongkat ali does wonder, better than viagra.
The animals are so defenseless and helpless, don't be heartless...
Like Andy said,
"As with many Malaysian problems, nothing will be done until there is significant public pressure."

Well, the enforcements couldn't even protect its' own species, what hope lies to those endangered species?
Still don't give a hoot? Have it your way then. Ponder un momento. Those creatures might be your reincarnated relatives/ancestors.

That's granma there inside the bowl.
So fellow readers, when you're in an exotic place, wanting to try an exotic cuisine, think about this:
"When the Buying Stops, the Killing Can Too"

Adab Membesuk Di Rumah Sakit

Is it wrong to have/bring jovial mood when you visit your friends in hospital?
I was visiting friend. (Not faiz, nor syah, but other friend who was also admitted). The family members were around and all in somber mood.
Being me, I greeted him happily and crack a light joke. And I got 'the STARE' from what I guess was his mother.
So I was like.. OK...
Later outside, the 'mum' confronted me "Are you happy he's sick?"
"Ziarah orang sakit tak patut suka suka macam ni. Ada adab nyer sendiri."
Eh, mokcik ni, dari aliran mana la datang ni. "Are you mad? He is sick, not dead..." I felt like snapping, but I hold my tongue instead.
But seriously, I always thought you shouldnt be 'toxic face' because it will eventually effect the 'sick' person, making him sicker.
Shouldnt it be, when someone cheers you up, you'll feel elated and it will automatically boost your immune system? Plus, isn't 'laughter is the best medicine' ?
I just dont get it... The only possible explanation is that aunty must have work with private hospital. The longer the patient is bed-ridden, the more moolah the hospital would churn.
On the other hand, when I visited Faiz last week, the opposite things occured. He was the one who cracked jokes (he was so engrossed in Mr. Bean, much to my amusement). Granted, it's Mr. Bean jokes, but jokes nonetheless. :p
If I Were A Mean Uncle...

I would have disconnected the power while this kiddo enjoying her ride.
Do you know the power outlet for rides (and even some atms) in KLCC are clearly visible and within reach to public. Imagine yourself trying to withdraw money, suddenly the machine off. There's no power. Turn out this bibik plugged it off to plug in her floor polisher. :p

Read Any Good Subtitles Lately?
There was a mini bloggers gathering this morning.
X-xis planned for a movie. He said there would be 4-5 people there and he only mentioned Nurul would be there. I was guessing Syah would be here too (he did mentioned it in his blog).
At 9.30 I reached KLCC, went to bread shop, bough nothing. Decided to have la-cucur instead. What a luck, bumped into Syah and a girl. Joined them for b'fast. Later I was introduced to Nurul. Had a little chat while we wait for X-xis.
Syah painstakingly prepared a token of appreciation for all.

Sweet. Thanks =)
Then, off we went for the movie. It was a surprised movie, therefore, I had no idea what movie we were about to watch. Nurul only said, the movie started at 11.20. I looked over the time-table screen, the only movie at that time was Ming Ming (a romatic chinese movie)... Bior benor!?
Its ok lah, since its free, just watch then. Then, when we were about to enter the hall, only did she say it's 'Wild Hog'. But actually, she wanted to watch Pocong (the horror movie). After discussing for a 20 seconds, they decided to switch the movie.. Yeay (i'd watched wild hog)... :)
That was the first Malay/Indo movie I watched in cinema this year. And found it funny that Malay(indo) movie has a Malay subtitle (it's akin British movie with American subtitle).
The thing about subtitle (or a movie title) in Malaysia is that, it's most probably being done by half-hearted ah beng who would rather be in a karaoke parlour than translating movies.

A movie Finding Nemo was translated into 'Kesah Ikan Chomel' (A cute fry tale), Charlie's Angel was 'Tiga Gadis Detektif' (Three Detective Chicks) and the super funny was A Day After Tommorrow. It was translated as 'Lusa' (A Day After Tomorrow). The translation is correct semantically, but by context it's... funny.

As for Pocong, there were several dialogues which were wrongly translated. And there were instances where the translations killed the suspense (it disclosed what was going to happen).
But the transaltion which caught Syah and my attention was; 'Yang' (darling-noun). It was translated to 'Jahanam' (damn-verb). Hmmm... the translator was too much reading between the line perhaps. X-xis sat far away from me to watch his reaction... and Nurul? well, half of the time, her hand would cover her face (sorry :p).
In the end, I think, the movie is better than most asian horror flicks nonetheless.
In a mean time, Im waiting for Puaka Paya Hijau III (Shrek 3) to masuk panggung.
p/s: X-xis said I loose weight. I'm sticking to my original argument; it's the camera who made me look fat...:p

Naturally Born Vegetarian Part II
Le Blood Theory
=====================
Int he beginning, everyone had blood type O. Then the change from hunter-gatherer has led to mutation in the blood type to adapt agrarian lifestyle (Type A). This occured around 35,000 years ago.
The merging and migratin of these people (A + O)resulted in another round of mutation. Thus, species is created - B Type (15,000 yrs ago).
As for AB, only recently did the blood emerge, that was around 1000 yr ago. Nobody knows where they came from (the book said its thru modernisation, but I didnt buy it).
Type A Meal Plan
=====================
Type A flourish on vegetarian diets; the inheritance of our more settled and less warlike farming ancestors.
The food would be categorised as Beneficial (+), Neutral(*) Or Harmful(-).
Simply put, Beneficial is a food that acts like a MEDICINE. Neutral, the food that acts like ... FOOD. And Harmful = POISON.

Apart from Blogging, My Daily Activities Would be

Trouble shooting the system early in the morning.

Having coffee in the morning (and tea in the mid-day).

Having a light lunch at KLCC and dreaming I was working in one of the europe office instead (company provided lunch for them, its included in staff benefits).
The cafe we have in this building? Half slice of hard-boiled egg cost 80¢ plus 5% tax. The banana fritter costs 50¢ each and its a size of two fingers.. that small.. The portion are small, the price is exorbitant, cashiers are mean, so on so on. Complains by complains have fallen into a deaf ear. Somehow I believe they (managements) are relatives to KL cab drivers, so arrogant and oblivious to the public opinions.

Trouble shooting the other system in the afternoon.
If you think the Indo and French languages user interfaces are a headache already, wait till you see the source code.

It's in freakin German.

Once in a while, I'll get the shock in my lifetime when I stare outside my window and suddenly these people appear.
Then dinner.

and sometimes a movie. This was the brightest cinema room ive ever been into. We were watching Blades of Glory, and the ah beng cinema 'jaga' forgot to turn off the light.

And then, i'll head home and have a good time observing people in the lrt. Like this couple. That horizontal holder rail was not a problem to them. Awkward it might seem, but no barrier could ever separated them.

Naturally Born Vegetarian
Bought an interesting book by Dr Peter D'Adamo; Eat Right 4 Your Type.The book talks about your blood type and your ideal dietary requirements.
Being a type A, I am a naturally born vegetarian. Blood A evolved when human started to settle down from hunter-gatherer (Blood O). Thus our stomache, and the acid secretions adapted to the new enviroment. Making us (the blood A) more tolerable towards fruit, vegetable and grains.
Simply put, as an Cultivator, Agrarian, these are my attributes:
Strenghts
=====================
Adapts well to dietary and environmental changes.
Immune system preserves and metabolizes nutrients more easily.
Weaknesses
=====================
Sensitive digestive tract.
Vulnerable immune system, open to microbial invasion.
Medical Risks
=====================
Heart Disease * Cancer * Anemia * Type I diabetes
Exercise
=====================
Calming, centring exercises such as Yoga and Tai-Chi
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As comparison. let's look at TYPE O's attributes:
Strenghts
=====================
Hardy digestive tract. System designed for efficient metabolism and preservation of nutrients
Strong immune system
Weaknesses
=====================
Intolerant to new dietary, environmental conditions
Immune system can be over active and attack itself
Medical Risks
=====================
Blood clotting disorder * Arthritis * Ulcers * Allergies
Exercise
=====================
Intense pysical exercise such as aerobics, martial arts and running.
Bummer, the worst type O could get is ulcer, as compared to us; cancer....
I'll discuss more on type A dietary (food that benefits us, food that we should avoid) on th enext entry..
If I were To Have A Cat...
The breed would be the Sphynx.
Seriously. Isn't she adorable!
They were like the cutest cat ever. Plus no fur, so maintenance is a cinch.
As for the name, I would give them a fancy name like
Nur Jannah Ismail
Or in case, the cat 'berbangsa Cina', I'll name her
Veronica Tan Siew Mei
Cat got race meh?
Well, I saw some cats live in temple. So I presume they're Chinese Buddist.. plus the hawkers always speak chinese to them :p
I dont get it why people gave silly name like tompok, boo-boo, to the cat. Like, its not degrading enough they have to beg for food. Pity them.. I believe they should have a proper name.
Snuggly.. awww... supa kawaiii
But of course having said that, in reality, I wouldnt want any pet (children included) living with me. In addition of not liking them much, Im also an irresponsible lot. :p
There's once when I was really young, I tried to prove the 'cat always landed on its feet' and 'has-9-lives' theories. So I threw this kitten from the 11th floor flat Jalan Tunku. The theory proved to be nothing but a heartache (cried for days okay, not to mention the mess I had to clean)...
Seriously. Isn't she adorable!
They were like the cutest cat ever. Plus no fur, so maintenance is a cinch.
As for the name, I would give them a fancy name like
Nur Jannah Ismail
Or in case, the cat 'berbangsa Cina', I'll name her
Veronica Tan Siew Mei
Cat got race meh?
Well, I saw some cats live in temple. So I presume they're Chinese Buddist.. plus the hawkers always speak chinese to them :p
Weekend Random [Week 19]
The Malaysian just love to do everything together. Even queueing up to book a game when one peson suffice. On top of that, that is not rocket science to figure out that this gorup would take their own sweet time at the counter. Be it in a cinema, in KFC or even in this case, a bowling alley. They only decided how many games they want to play only when they're in front of the cashier.
Like, there they were, 5 minutes ago, chatting idly. Only to argue how many games they wanted and how much time they got. One want to play 3 games the other four, 2 undecided. Finally, they settled for 2 games each.
Btw, I lost to a bunch of 13yr olds. They were playing next to me, in a school uniform, and scored higher... Battered and humiliated, off I went for theraphy (retail.. random 3).
As Long As The Service Improve
Government servants deserve pay rise, says Pak Lah
By SHAHANAAZ SHER HABIB and V.P. SUJATA
KUALA LUMPUR: All government servants will get a pay rise “because they deserve it,” said Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
“That’s how we all feel about it,” said the Prime Minister.
He added that it had been a long time since government servants had received a pay increase.
“Everyone will get the pay rise – only the quantum will differ. We want to narrow the gap between those who earn more and those who earn less.
“Right now, the gap is too wide and this might not be a good thing because the higher income group can afford more than the lower income group and this could be a problem,” he told reporters after opening the World Halal Forum 2007 here yesterday.
Be Realistic
By DEVID RAJAH
PUTRAJAYA: The Government and the country's 1.2 million public servants, who have been promised a pay rise, will have to be realistic over the quantum of increase, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said.
The Prime Minister said affordability was a factor when deciding the quantum of the pay increase for government servants.
“We are considering various options. At the same time, we have to be realistic in terms of financial affordability,” he told newsmen after a Cabinet committee meeting on the establishment and salaries for the public service here yesterday.
The meeting, chaired by Abdullah, was also attended by Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan.
Abdullah said no decision had been made on the quantum of salary revision or increase.
“Being realistic is the most important factor as far as we are concerned,” he said, adding that the meeting also covered issues pertaining to the performance and productivity of civil servants besides the need to reward them.
On whether a decision on the increase would be made in time for the public sector Workers Day gathering on May 21, Abdullah said: “It depends.”
The Prime Minister had said on Monday that government servants would get a pay increase because they deserved it.
Good for them. Should we expect better service then?
An Aged Book With A History
One of the book I bought at that silly book fair was this 'Mist Over Pendle' by Robert Neils.
On the backcover:
"Set against a background of rural Lancashire in the early seventeen century, where death is not much an Act of God as a product of the incantations of witches, MIST OVER PENDLE tells the story of Margaret Whitaker, the orphaned daughter of a Cambridge don, who leaves her home in Lambeth to live with relatives on the Lanchashire and Yorkshire border. A number of deaths have occurred among local folk and Margery discovers that before they died the people showed signs of belladonna poisoning. Two old crones are suspected of witchcraft, and Margery and her cousin, Roger Nowell, investigate their devilish work."
Should be an interesting read. I love mysteries.
However, since the book was published in 1951, the queen's english and the writing style were beyond my comprehension. Therefore, after like 10-12 pages, I lost my concentration to go any further.
'It was Prudence, of the practical mind, who made answer instead. Somehow, she declared, a portion must be found. With one there might even be a goodly husband, since even a divine might well look past a fault or two for a portion that would furnish out his parsonage; and when Alexander reared his head at this slur on his cloth, Prudence swept that aside with a sniff.'
Whoaaa... I were about to put away the book and switch off the bedlight when something fell on the bed.
Arghh dead cockroaches! D*mn old book!
My first thought was. Upon close inspection however, it was a dried leaves. I flipped thru the book to look for more. And they were there, nicely tucked (albeit crumbling) between pages.
And the 'cockroaches'were not the only surprise I got. I flipped for more and found these:
An armadillo photograph....
An NKF Thank You card.
And the most prized treasure:
A love note.....'Dear Alice, This is how the people carried on in your old home town !! Hope to see you over there soon.'
I felt gooey.. and touched.
The Beginning of Futile Search for Ms. Sherwood
======================
Who is Ms. Sherwood? Where is she? What is she doing now? Is she alive?
Did she deliberately sold her book with the treasure or was it stolen?
Did she passed away and a family member donated the book away?
I hope wherever she is, she would be happy to know her book and note are in a good hand =)
PS: Finally finished the book. The book doesnt have an ending. It hangs there.... grrrr
A theoritical holiday, an alleged voodo and a lot of headache
'Regardless of how unnatural things might seem, somehow we manage to move on, with secrets left in a family that outsiders don't get to know. Even when trials occur, most families manage to work things out.'
-Amrita, Banana Yoshimoto.
Blame it to the cosmos constellation but lately I was under the weather. I'd been gaining weight, fell sick twice in a week, moody.. etc.
Therefore, I took a long sabbatical 04/26/ - 05/03. Packed my bag and headed back.
Huge mistake!!
In the end the whole journey left me more lethargic...
I thought to stop bloggin. But then for no reason, Syafique, Daffie and this guy, which I regularly read their blogs, stop bloggin also.
So I decided to hang on a little bit more.. till I reach the point of diminishing return.
Cooking Oil Shortage?
Govt to act soon on claims of cooking oil shortage
KUALA LUMPUR: The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry will make a decision soon on what needs to be done to overcome claims of cooking oil shortage in the country.
The ministry’s deputy secretary-general Datuk Mohamedsha Mislam said a meeting to discuss the matter was held on Thursday at Putrajaya, chaired by the secretary-general Mohd Zain Mohd Dom.
“The country is one of the biggest oil producers in the world, and therefore the ministry will have to conduct a detailed research on the matter before appropriate action can be taken,” he told reporters after launching the Third Malaysian International Branded Bedding Fair held at the Ikano Power Centre here on Thursday.
It had been reported recently that consumers were facing problems purchasing 1kg-cooking oil packets, especially in Penang and Kedah. Minister Datuk Shafie Apdal said on April 28 that there was no shortage of cooking oil, and that the commodity could be easily bought in hypermarkets, although it seemed to be difficult to purchase in small retail shops.
The world's largest producer and exporter of palm oil today is Malaysia, producing about 47% of the world's supply of palm oil. Indonesia is the second largest world producer of palm oil producing approximately 36% of world palm oil volume. Both nations are expanding their palm oil production capacity and the market continues to grow.
==================
How could this happening? Our domestic consumptions are less than 5% from total productions.
So fishy..........
Luckily I use Eagle Cooking Oil (peanut based) :p
