MALAYSIA Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) will spend some RM135 million to upgrade facilities at the KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang to accommodate the Airbus A380, the world’s largest commercial aircraft.
MAHB senior general manager for operation services Azmi Murad said works include the provision of shoulder on both sides of the two existing runways as well as the taxiways, building additional aerobridges at the three departure halls, namely C17, C27 and C37, and enhancing the mezzanine lounges for upper deck passengers of the aircraft at the departure halls.
“All works are projected to be completed by May next year,” he told reporters in a briefing on modification works at KLIA yesterday.
At the moment, he said works on the second runway and the C17 lounge have started and progressing well.
“We hope to be able to complete the lounges concurrently with works on the runways,” he said.
Malaysia Airlines is purchasing six A380s. In March this year, MAHB awarded Road Builder (M) Sdn Bhd the RM99.23 million contract to accommodate large aircraft operations.
The company took possession of the project in April 3 and it is expected to be completed on May 28 2007. Meanwhile, Azmi said MAHB will and has undertaken several projects to improve the facilities at KLIA.
For instance, he said since July 1, the airport operator has introduced the “countdown” system for its passengers’ baggage handling, both for the international and domestic flights.
Under the “countdown system”, he said a timing desplay has been installed to enable passengers to know the time taken for their bags to arrive from the aircraft to the baggage carousel.
“The timing will kick-in once the first bag reaches the conveyor belt to the carousel,” he said.
