Southern Thai: หมู่เกาะพีพี Ko Phi Phi P3

Managed to wake up early to catch the sunrise though.. woo hoo. Well, I was a bit early, and waiting for like forever for the sunrise, so i went back to sleep.

Then I woke up again at 8.00, awaken by the noise actually. I told him my plan (do nothing till 11), so he left to the beach.. and I continued my slumber vacation, lying in bed whole morning, solving sudoku twice.

By 10, we were ready. I'm heading to Phuket, while he'll stay for another day or two. But because the chalet is far from everything, he decided to check out as well and find something near the town.

What a beautiful day it was! I wish I could stay another day, but Im scared I'll miss the boat to Phuket tomorrow, and will miss the flight back home.. hihiihih.

We had breakfast/brunch at the restaurant. He has the yogurt above. He said it was good. I had pineapple fried rice. FINALLY, when I were about to leave, something good for my tummy.. Yum Yum.

And the tall watermelon slush was so oh heavenly.. as if all the constellation lined up and made today a perfect day.. hmm mmm.. After breakfast it's time to leave.

Here goes nothing.. Snap some last pic and we headed down the stairs.

Down down down. and from one end to another. By the time we reahed the end of the beach and to the entrace to the hill (to town) I was already exhausted. Omigod, could we take the boat.. of course he wouldnt havve any of it.. added to the chagrin. SO I went to auto nag mode. Another argument ensued..

U rip my wallet boat ride.

Seriously by then I felt like leaving him there and then. When we reached the town I told him this is it. Nice knowing you. You go your way, and I'll headed to mine. In tears I walked slowly towards the jetty...

Well, that would be great story if its for the valentine day. But in real life it never like that. I hope you guys dont fall for that.. suckerss...

What really happened was when we reached the town, he headed for the hostel to put his stuff, and I went to the travel agent I saw yesterday for the ticket. We agree to meet at the pier in an hour. I got the ticket for 2pm. Praying it wont sank.. then the nice agent said, "look out for the biggest boat in the pier, Sea Angle cruise.. Do you need ground transportation in Phuket."

The thrift side of me won over, I turned the offer down (on which I would regret later). Said thanks and left... and walk towards the pier.

And yeah there's a mosque here.. Kinda weird when you see topless women, and then you heard the muazzin calling for prayers...

Not an hour yet, so, I walked around, looking for souvenirs. Bought some fridge magnets (SKin & aya. magnet korang tu penuh keringat dan ayer mata tau!)

Almost time, I got back to the pier.. and wait. and wait.. and wait.. sitting, standing, how long? well, long enough for tourist to think I'm the ticket agent there...

Wait I was.. okay he's not coming.. I leave to grab some drinks, then i felt a pat on my back... turned around... "Oh hi.."

"Sorry I was late.."

True story :p

So we sat by the beach right in front of the jetty. Didnt talk much. I was busy with my sudoku. Then it was time for me to leave. We headed to the boat.

"I'm sorry for loosing my temper a lot while we're travelling together." he apologised.

The devil inside me was like - Is he playing the reverse psychology game? As far as I could remember, im the one who nag a lot. "Apology accepted. So this is it.."

We bid goodbye. Part of me know this would be the last encounter ever.. He said he'll be back to KL in may-june. But I told him, there's no more air asia to europe. It's cheaper for you to travel from Bangkok...

"Maybe I'll see you in UK?" he suggested..

"u,oh, I hate the fucking country, not gonna happen.." kan orang dah offer olive branch, aku hinjak2... But hey, I was just being a realist.

In this life, some friends stay, some come and go, others never to be heard again.. Ce'st la vie..

Final chapter has been unfolded. From here, I travel solo.

====================================

Before the boat moved, I was sitting inside the middle deck (it's 3-4 layer decks), hmm, kinda empty.. I loiikkeee.

Suddenly, at 2.00p, out of nowhere, there's load of koreans joining in. Where did they come from? Did I missed asian beach or something? Oh well...

Then the boat moved and the music started.. and the fucking captain chose this song by Michael Jackson..

Sick or what? Im so not in a mood to be mellow...

So I moved to the open upper deck. And decided to tannenised (is there such a word) the rest of my body. So I went topless. And put 130spf on the burnt part...nope, still doesnt work... still half cooked.

my tan look like this. hideous!

Btw, I still got full bar on my phone while we were in the middle of the ocean. Strong signal indeed. Remember folk : AIS. RM5 starter pack :p

After about 1.5 hr we arrived at the phuket island. The contrast was striking.. from turquoise blue water to green mossy.

Then we went though the river mouth. The water is murkier and the smell.. reminded me of Penang. hihihihi.

There's 2-3 jetty in Phuket and the one we stop by was not the main one. So there's no public transport. Now it dawned to me the decision I made is already biting me... Checked google map.. It was 3.5km. Okay 3.5 km is nothing (i thought). Lets walk...

After an hour walk from A-B under the heat and pollutions really take a toll on my already weak body. There's a couple of tuk tuk ready to stop and took me to my destination, but I was adamant to get it by myself, by foot. Have to finish what I started.

I was soaking wet, aw KFC along the way, tempted to go... but i keep on going because im running out of battery. When I finally reached the Phuket Road. I went down the direction as directed.. But the number on the shop keep on getting bigger. The hotel address is 2, phuket road. but Im now in 369 (348 across the road).... Hey it google maps, it never make mistake. (turned out it was beta)

Now I had two options, continue walking down for another 300m until the destination on the map or follow my instinct to go on the other directions. I took the third option, went into a pastry/cake shop and ask for direction from this young and cute girl. Luckily the email I had was written in Thai and english.. She wasnt sure about the hotel, but by address she could confirm its the other way.

Damn you google map. Said khap khun kup and made my way up. and the phone completely died by then. Now I got nothing to refer to but instinct. Few crosses and roundabouts later the number seems legit. Imagined I had to go all the way from 348 to 2. Thats 346 shops I had to pass by. 84... 62... 46... 28. then I arrived at the "dead end". Fudge... there's a river across and the road name and numebr was missing afterward. So close yet so far. If not I already prepaid for the room, i would have walked in other hotels scattered around.

Luckily there was cyber cafe right in front of me (harap tak kena rotan pegi cc). Paid rm2 for an hour, bought lipton tea and started googling the info. Turned out it was behind the cafe (its a T junction, I took the wrong road). And yeah mr google map, the direction is in C, not B!!! TQVM for making my life a living hell.

Spent an hour in the cafe, hey I already paid for it... and made my way to the hotel.. Arrived there at 6! More than 2 hr walking..

Checked in and for the first time, had the proper shower ever after like 10 days.

There's several ways you could reach the viewpoint, we used the scenic one (beach road - stairs up the hill)

Form the pier, we walked up to the Dalam bay area. Walked along the beach all the way until we reached the twin palm bungalow.

Here its a little bit tricky, because there's no sign around. To get there you have to go through the tsunami memorial "park", but if you mentioned tsunami, the local would direct you to the other way (tsunami evacuation centre). so we just follow the instinct and finally we found the road to the viewpoint.

You'll walk along the tiny road with shophouses on the left and right. And somewhere in the middle, there's a small sign to take the stairs up to the viewpoint. Easily missed if youre not alert.

And boy the stairs were crazy long. WE just walked like 5 km from the long beach, now the stairs.. urgh Kinabalu all over again. Im so going to curse if I didnt loose at least 5kg..

*bad news. I gained 2 kg instead. By the end of the trip I was 67kg (kilogajah). Like, how is it possible? I didnt eat, the amount of exercise I had was phenomenal, I was sleep deprived, and yet I gained weight? Makan babi kot... huhuhuhu.. misteri nusantara.

"Could you be a little bit faster, I'm afraid its gonna get dark soon"..

Fuh, memang ayat yg nak mengundang maki hamun okay. "Could you be a little bit more considerate, youre 6'2" im 5'7", youre 28 im 36".... motip mengaku tua? Dah la tak sempat nak berenti amik2 gambar.. Terpaksa kasi direction guna imaginasi, kalau ada gambar senang jer pos (macam korang amik pot guidance aku pun kan!).

Asal aku penat jer ko nak cari gaduh yek. Pas tu sampai atas kena bayar tol rm2 pulak. dan yg penting dia ni nak bayar guna syiling.. jenuh korek, aku bagi duit not tak mau ni.. nak habiskan sebab esok dah nak balik.. hello, aku yg nak balik, ko stay lagi 2 bulan.. plus lusa lah aku balik, kat Phuket boleh habiskan ..

Ingatkan dah sampai toll booth tu dah dekat benor ler.. siap ada 2 cabang lagi nak sampai puncak, jurutol tunjuk ke arah kiri.. walaupun papan tanda tunjuk arah kanan.. how??

Anyway finally ard 6 ish we arrived on top.. the day was hazy, therefore the view was okay. On a clear day I bet the view is stunning.

The jetty side is on the left (with many boats), whereas the smelly side is on the right (Dalam bay). How smelly? Korek montot dan sila cium bau.. cenggitulah kira kiranya bau laut di sebelah kanan itu.

Dont expect to find serenity up there.

Because the viewpoint is crowded all the time. Someone next to me quipped "come experience asia without asians.."

I turned to him ...

"Oh youre not asian, you're Thais.."

What what what?

But he was kinda right, for the past few days, I hardly see any asians. Maybe its the new year (chinese), everyone at home celebrating.

Not 10 min after we reached the top he suggested we descend now. Like are you serious?

"It will get dark and we might have problem going back to the long beach.."

"Oh worry not you silly English, as I posses a magical tool called torchlight. MUahahhaah"

"You did? Great..." so we stayed till the mosquitoes start bitingdusk.

When we reached the town center it was already dark. Lets have dinner. As usual he let me choose the place. I saw this fabolous place selling freshly baked pizza. So I stopped.

Pizza2 yg enak sedang menyeru namaku umpama panggilan pulau

dek kerana terlalu lapar aku sudah bayangkan pizza itu sedang menari umpama siput serawak (bersuara normadiah, camno?), pizza mushroom tu dok selak2 kain cenggitu. Ko boleh? (I could have sworn the pizza was callin my name)

Alas, that's not the case.. "no no no, we'll have proper food." Same routine ensued. Too expensive, no customers, no more rice please, I only eat indian at home (england)....

"Cenggilah, awak ikut perut awat, saya ikut perut saya. Kita jumpa kat sini dalam masa sejam suku. Ok?" (In english - why dont you go ahead, Im not really hungry, we'll meet here in 1hr 15 min, I think im going for a massage there..) ko mampu translate lain bebeno?

Honestly I felt like having a massage, but I was wet and smelly.. So I cancelled. I just walked around and saw one travel agent that sell very cheap ticket to Phuket. It was RM25, compared to RM35 at other places. Earmarked the place for tomorrow. Ah sudah, aku dah berjangkit perangai dia ka? Biar tenggelam asal murah?

Continued walking around the area, and before I knew it I was back at the pizza place. Took it as a divine intervention, I decided to have it. at RM8 per piece I got nothing to loose anyway...

Sat at the back. First bite... what the fuck is wrong with the thai. Everything tasted horrible.. makanan macam tahi sial! kalo tak reti meniaga toksah meniaga la.. dasar melayu.. eeee..

I dont know how you could fuck up with pizza.. its just flour base, tomato paste, veggie and cheese. But the taste is wrong wrong wrong.

Went to the rubbish dump to throw the pizza away, then I saw it.. 3/4 of the bin full of halfly eaten pizza.! Im not the only one.. ABAH!! hak tui. throw it and leave. eeee panas!

*ABAH = makian tahap dewa.

Sigh, gonna get hungry again tonite. He was already there when I reached the place..

"How's the massage.."

"I didnt go..." I honestly replied. udah2 ler menipu. karang tak pasal2 masuk gaung ke apa ka.

So we headed back to the long beach.

Hiking in the dark was quite challenging. There's a luminate path here and there, but it was pretty scary and after a long stair exercise just now, my calfs almost gave away.

Fire dance went awry.

Finally we reached the long beach.. I was so exhausted.."I need a massage..."

"There's one there".. it's okay, lets go the the one near our place, So that after the massage I dont have to walk that far..

Babi, sial, tutup pulak dah... (defuq, the place was closed). Urghhhhhh..

Too tired to care, we continued all the way to the hut. I took a shower, and I went back for the massage! Yeah I had crappy day today and nothing could stop me from having a good massage.

Phew, arrived at the one. Aloe massage at 50 (thai massage was 25), but i think i need to mosturise my skin.. aloe it it. Paid and took off my shirt.. laid down and ready.

"Sir, take off you pants"

"huh? but I dont wear underwear"

"its okay, nothing we havent seen before" in her serious face and voice...

oh heck, here goes.. la la la..

and no! there was no hanky panky.. strictly professional. Not really naked, I got sarong covering my butt and private parts.

It was soothing, cooling and heavenly. But the walk back was dreadful. To climb the stairs.. omigod.. when I finally reached the hut, there's no more energy left..

Southern Thai: หมู่เกาะพีพี Ko Phi Phi P1

The journey from Lanta (D) to Phi Phi aka Pulau Kencing (E) would take about 1.5hr (sejam setengah bukan sejam limapulo minit).

Uneventful ride on the clear calm day.

I sat at the lower level, under the aircond (hihihih), but then there's a lot of travel touts around forcing tourist to but the package from them. Luckily I looked local. Phew..

When they started to harrass local, I decided to join Dave in the open.. arghhh, I'm melting.

Andai ku tahu apa yg akan terjadi kelak, pasti sudah ku tolak dikau ke dalam laut.. muahahahah

Ko Phi Phi (หมู่เกาะพีพี) is a small archipelago with several islands in Krabi Province, Southern Thailand.

The name Phi Phi (pronounced ‘pee pee’) originates from Malay, the original name for the islands were ‘Pulao Pi ah Pi. The name refers to the mangrove wood found there.

Most of the development of Phi Phi Don is situated in or around Ton Sai village, which is on the low, sandy isthmus that joins the two hilly spurs that comprise the rest of the island. There are also other, quieter resorts on Long Beach, Laem Thong, and at other less accessible areas of the island.

Ko Phi Phi is considered to be one of the most naturally beautiful islands in the world (in fact, there are six islands in Phi Phi). They lie 50km south-east of Phuket and are part of Had Nopparattara - Koh Phi Phi National Park which is home to an abundance of corals and amazing marine life. There are limestone mountains with cliffs, caves and long white sandy beaches. The national park covers a total area of 242,437 Rai.

From archaeological discoveries, it is believed that the area was one of the oldest communities in Thailand dating back to the prehistoric period. It is believed that this province may have taken its name after the meaning of Krabi, which means sword. This may have stemmed from a legend that an ancient sword was unearthed prior to the city’s founding.

Koh Phi Phi comprises of 6 islands, 2 of them main:
1) Ko Phi Phi Don- the largest and only populated island.
2) Ko Phi Phi Leh- a smaller island to the south, popularised when parts of the movie "The Beach" were filmed there. Uninhabited apart from bird nest harvesters and a few Maya Bay wardens; expect plenty of tourists during daylight hours, especially in Maya Bay, also known as 'the beach'.
3) Ko Mai Phai ('Bamboo Island')- a small low-lying islet to the north of Phi Phi Don with several good beaches.
4) Ko Yung (Yung Island)- is north of Ko Phi Phi Don. The island has a stone beach in the east and small sandy beaches at the foot of the hills. It is teeming with various kinds of colourful coral reefs.
5,6) Bida Nok and Bida Nai- two small adjacent limestone karsts to the south of Phi Phi Leh, with near-vertical cliff walls rising from the sea.

We stayed at the long beach area (Purple dot on the map). The viewpoint is on the green dot, whereas the town center is on the black dot

Upon arrival you have to pay RM2 for conservation fee. Kinda sad when you pay for the conservation fee, but it was utilised to make the jetty bigger so that more tourist would come in. And destroy the corals and the beach....

The jetty is right in the middle of the island. You could walk "across" the island in 5 min. From the jetty to loh dalam bay.

Size-wise its about the same with Kradan, however it's more commercialised. With many banks, restaurants, travel agencies, hotels and hostels, convinient stores, etc. It give you a feel of Kuta Beach, Bali, but instead of Australian, you'll see Scandinavians everywhere.

Loh dalam beach. Nice beach, but a bit smelly.

At the jetty pier, dont expect to find a free map around. Yoou have to walk to the other side (loh dalam), the tourist center here is friendlier and I got the free map.. woo hoo, not that you really need it, but its nice to have.

Next, we have to scout for the accommodation. As usual, some arguments and I always loose. So, we headed to the Long beach by smaller boat. It's like 3 minutes ride and we have to pay RM10 each. Buduh.

At the long beach, i told him to look for the accommodation while I took care of our belongings. 30 min later he was nowhere to be found. I was tempted to book a chalet right behind me. 10 min after that he's back and said the room was booked and the cheapest was RM70 per night. But....

We have to walk 2 km down the beach and another 500m up the hill to reach it. By stairs! and lots of it.. in the middle of the day. With the heat, and been hungry and lethargic, my mood turned into nasty.

The magnificent view on top did nothing to cool me down.

When we reached up there and at the reception's area cum restaurant, I thought that was it..

But we have to walk another 500m to reach the place. And he was like "I'm sorry but I think you might not like it. He room was kinda old, etc etc"

and I was murmuring and cursing..

and he was like " I said, Im sorry, what else do you want me to do.."

"roll down the hill and die!" .. well, at least thats what I wanted to say..

"here's our room.."

"You made me cursed you for that? What is wrong with you..."

"I dont know, I thought you hate it.."

Matilah aku sudah dicop posh, "It's perfect.. I like it." terus mood bertukar ceria.

With a view like this on the verandah, who could complain. plus its super cheap..

With clean and working western toilet, and huge bed. and separate blanket. No longer we had to fight over the blanket at night.

While he was busy unpacking, I explored the whole area.. Well, not the whole, just around..

The electric wire was low though.. at night you might accidentally touch it and get fried.

And oooohh, this tree... hihihi

Buah kote mamak. Lama kucari, ketemu jua di sini rupanya.

Did I mentioned the view was perfect? We're on top of the hill, safe from the tsunami (phew).. But yeah, although its cheap and nice, the location was a letdown. Dont even think of staying here if you have small children. Not to mention you have to take the boat to go to the town center. Or you could hike 45 min through the jungle to the town center.

If youre particular abt halal food, add 6 times up and down these stairs for breakfast, lunch and dinner :p

Overall, its going to take 1hr++ for the nearest activity. The beach was just 10 min away though.

By 12 he was itching to go out.. You go first, I'll meet you later. 3 hrs later I decided to join.

But, I made a pit stop somewhere and had the pizza (cheese + olives + tomatoes + basils). It was disgusting and expensive. Maybe it's a karma, because I sneak behind him for food... hihihihi

But everytime I eat with him I'll be angry and hungry, because the food would taste horrid. I'm not a picky eater, I dont mind eating by the roadside, but I got certain expectation on how the food should taste like. Like tomyum should taste like tomyum, not water+lemongrass soup. Or the pizza to taste like pizza, not a stale bread + sour paste and burnt basil+tomatoes (rm30 for that, kimek betul)..

SO anyway, I received a text.. "just walk along the beach and you'll find me"

Like seriously, walked abt 2-3 km to look for a white guy in an oceans of white people. Like I was the only asian around, wouldnt it be easier for you to spot me than the other way around? (I thought the Long Beach was crowded, but it turned out the it was the least crowded compared to others)

and in this heat??

I gave up half way and took a dip. Luckily he saw me from miles away (like duh), and joined me later.

By 4.30p we decided to go to the town center by foot. SO we headed all the way to the end of the beach, and go up a hill (another one), through a jungle...

and two beaches later still nowhere near.. Im glad I had the pizza just now.. It's 45 min walk

dan sepanjang jalan, akan kelihatan ikan2 duyung terdampar di tepi laut.. free show katanya. (and along the way you'll see topless maidens + grannies basking under the afternoon sun)..

and we continued walking...walking on the beach, walking on the hill,

and walking along the plank..

Until finally we reached the town.. phew...

Hello doggie.. bought some drinks and headed to the viewpoint.

The smelly beach again..
